A new blog is born
Finally, my own place where I can post about APEX development in general and about things of interest to the community!
I like menn.ooo because it is:
The .ooo domain is a top-level domain apparently launched by Infibeam, an Indian company, and is dedicated for any entity launching or expanding an e-commerce venture. As for me, I don’t have any intention of such, it just was cheaper than menno.blog for instance.
The domain was bought including hosting, so I could exclude all the hosted blog options such as wordpress.com and blogger.com. It took me a while to decide which CMS to use. The only requirement I was sure about: it must be free.
I avoided wordpress.org at first because I like to use new technologies. My first attempt was with bolt.cm due to its architecture and steep learning curve. But finding the right theme didn’t work out and modification seemed like extra work and time.
Using wordpress.org, I got the blog up and running in a weekend. The Hueman theme I use is free and fits all my needs. My designer capabilities are limited but Canva turns anyone into a pro. Most of the free images I use can be found on pexels.com or unsplash.com. Grammarly helps me improve my writing. I chose my theme colors using Adobe Colors because it looks a bit like the Dutch flag.
One cool thing I learned has to do with the header image. To make it look good on all screen sizes, I created this vector based (.svg) image with Inkscape. If you resize the screen less than 720px, you’ll notice I made the text inside the image responsive!
